This essay compares a poem by João Cabral de Melo Neto (Os Vazios do Homem) anda painting by René Magritte (Le Clef des Songes) in an intersemiotic relationship between word and image. aiming the discussion of the particularities of each language, verbal and pictorical. Poetry. working with the conventional verbal sign, reaches an iconic solution through the '' poetical image" : "this is that". Magritte 's painting uses the word to release the image from the "similarity" and to reach ''similitude .. : .. this is not that". In th.is crossover.the two arts are realized as aesthetical objects. questioning their language and simultaneously making use ofthe other sign system in order to move toward the potentialities oftheir own systems.
