The mysteries of the modern city: thoughts on The Exploits of Elaine (1914) and its Brazilians congeners

This article draws a map of the Brazilian circulation of the North American feuilletons and moving picture series The Exploits of Elaine, The New Exploits of Elaine e The Romance of Elaine (1914) – named The Mysteries of New York in Brazil –, as well as analyzes their national congeners. The success achieved by this piece of work in national ground determined the writing of two Mysteries of Rio de Janeiro: a movie series (by Coelho Netto in 1917) and the journalistic chronicles (by Benjamin Costallat in 1924). This article deals with the relations between the cinema and the newspaper in the years of 1910-20 and the influence the cinema had in the mise en scène of the newspaper chronicles.
