Duas ou três ideias de Carpeaux sobre Machado de Assis: estilo e sociedade

Abstract

Some of Carpeaux’s ideas concerning the Machadean perspective in a three-decade scope are presented,
emphasizing the first and the last texts of the set – an article from 1943, not collected in book form, and a
presentation of Machado’s short stories, dated from 1972, almost unknown to his critics. The article intends
to comprehend the critic’s point of view concerning the links that compose the dialectics between style
and society. In the end, it offers a brief analysis of the narrative “Galeria póstuma”, in which Machado,
according to Carpeaux, resorts to self-deprecation and emulates his own process of demystification.
