Inhabiting confinement: cat-children, affective infrastructures and politics of exclusion

This article analyzes the figure of the ‘cat-children’, both as an expression of a childhood confined by fear and enclosure, and as a response to the precariousness of life in contexts of urban vulnerability. Based on accounts from neighbours, mothers, and carers, the spatial, temporal, and emotional dimensions of living in confinement are explored. We argue that these experiences shape affective infrastructures that sustain life and activate adaptive strategies, allowing children to resist and reinvent their inhabiting conditions, transcending the domestic sphere. These figurations challenge functionalist and exclusionary urban logics, giving way to a situated critique that recognises childhood and care as key to imagining other possible urban futures.
