The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different times of pre-operative fast on serum concentration of glucose in healthy dogs, as well as on the complete anesthesia recovery of these animals. The animals had been divided in to groups, according to the fast period: Group I: 6 to 8 hours of starvation; Group II: 12 to 14 hours of starvation; Group III: more than 16 hours of starvation. Water was withheld for 2 hours before anesthesia. All the animals had been submitted to the same anesthesic procedure and elective surgery procedures. Blood samples for the glycemia test were withdrawn immediately before the pre-anesthesia and after the animal complete recovery. No differences were observed amone the three groups considering the glycemia value before and after anesthesia, as well as relationship the complete recovery period.Downloads
