Abstract

Biochemical characteristics of plasma and peritoneal fluid from 6 healthy horses were compared with those from 16 horses with colic. Significant increases were detected in total protein and inorganic phosphorus
concentrations in colicky horses. This was particularly true when colic was followed by intestinal ischemia. We conclude that biochemical changes in plasma and peritoneal fluid, when evaluated together with the clinical examination findings, provide a good index of case severity.
