Social Physique Anxiety Scale: a psychometric investigation of the factorial model in Brazilian adults

Resumo

Background: Due to the different factorial models available for the Social Physique Anxiety Scale (SPAS), a psychometric study is needed to
identify the most appropriate structure of the scale for a Brazilian sample.

Objectives: to estimate the psychometric properties of the SPAS
when applied to a sample of Brazilian adults and to explore a factorial model for the instrument.

Methods: First, the original SPAS single-factor model was assessed for the total sample through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The total sample was randomly divided into two groups. Exploratory factor analysis was carried out in one of the subsamples to identify underlying factors. The new structure was submitted to CFA using the other subsample. Estimates of convergent validity, discriminant validity, and reliability were also calculated.

Results: 979 adults with a mean age of 26.09 (SD = 6.37) years participated in the study, 70.5% of whom were women. A two-factor model was found in the exploratory analysis with adequate validity indexes and good reliability. Discussion/Conclusion: A two-factor model of the SPAS presented good indicators of validity and reliability for young Brazilian adults.

    João Marôco, Ph.D. from Washington State University, holds the position of full professor at ISPA-Instituto Universitário, where he imparts knowledge in Statistical Analysis, Research Methods, and Advanced Data Analysis Techniques. He has served as a consultant for the World Bank and the Teresa and Alexandre Soares dos Santos Education Initiative in Education Statistics. From 2014 to 2018, he served on the board of directors of IAVE, I.P., overseeing large-scale sampling evaluation studies (PISA, TIMSS, PIRLS, ICILS) and the e-Assessment pilot project. Conducting workshops and lectures on Statistical Analysis, Psychometrics, and Analysis of Structural Equations, João Marôco has shared his expertise across major universities in mainland Portugal, Brazil, Finland, Norway, Taiwan, and the U.K. His research focus spans the evaluation and development of psychometric scales, regression applications, structural equation modeling, large-scale student assessment, student engagement and burnout, and classification models in the biological, health, social, and human sciences. João Marôco has authored more than 450 papers in national and international journals with scientific refereeing, along with four books on Statistical Analysis, Structural Equations Modelling, and Psychometric Evaluation. According to Google Scholar, his work has garnered over 45,000 citations (H = 76; i10 = 300), placing him in the AD Scientific Index Top 3% of the most cited academics in Portugal and on Stanford/Elsevier's list of the Top 2% of world scientists. Beyond his academic pursuits, João Marôco is an influential contributor to Portuguese newspapers and a familiar presence in various media programs, especially those centered on educational statistics and education. His perceptive writings in newspapers and eloquent appearances on television and radio have established him as a prominent figure in the discourse on educational matters within the Portuguese media landscape.

  • Juliana Alvares Duarte Bonini Campos, São Paulo State University

    Juliana Campos (Ph. D., Universidade Estadual Paulista - UNESP) is an associate professor of UNESP where he teaches courses in Statistics, Research Methods and Data Analysis in the B.Sc, M.Sc. and Ph.D. cycles of study. She was the coordinator of the posgraduate program in Food and Nutrition (2013/2020), Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences – UNESP. Her research interests include psychometric scale evaluation and development and applications of regression and structural equation modeling in the health/biological as well as in the social and human sciences. She has published 300 papers in peer reviewed journals and 350 papers in proceedings of events. She oriented seven doctoral theses and seven M.Sc. dissertations in the area of Nutritional Sciences.
