Abstract

The purpose of this research was to study the range of movement of subtalar joint during the gait cycle on Three-Dimensional Kinematics Analysis, evaluating the clinicai applicability of Peak Performance System for this kind of study. Due to the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation out-patient ward has been in great demand, especially by women of over forty that present illnesses that compromise the subtalar joint function, twenty-nine asymptomatic women aging between 40-75 years were assessed. The Peak Performance System for Tridimensional Kinematics Analysis, with "Peak version 5.2" software, which applies a Direct Linear Transformation - DLT methodology was used. A variation of Nawoczenski et ai, 1995, methodology was applied. Since Peak 5.2 version software is not specific for gait analysis, the subtalar angle had to be calculated by a mathematical routine, which transformed the calculated number into the correspondent angles. In the statistic data treatment was applied the descriptive statistic of the angular values of the subtalar joint and the F-Test to compare the behavior between the right and left subtalar during the gait cycle. The results showed that the Three-Dimensional Kinematics using the Peak Perfomance System is accurate to asse 55 the functional behavior of the subtalar joint and to quantify their range of motion in the gait cycle (C=10,330 - SD=1,82; C=10,360 - SD=1,46 pronation - supination of the right and the left subtalar jOint). The findings of this study are coincidents with many authors Wright, 1964; Perry, 1992, Mann, 1993; Pratt, 1993; Inman, 1994 and show the physiological behavior of the subtalar joint.lt was observed that there are no significa tive differences between the behavior of the right and left subtalar joints.
