Objective: To characteristic different components of breathing pattern in Parkinson’s Disease patients (PD) and healthy elderly subjects. Method: We studied 10 patients with PD’s severity III-IV by Hoehn and Yahr and 10 healthy elderly. The following respiratory variables analysed were: tidal volume, respiratory frequency, minute ventilation, inspiratory duty cycle, mean inspiratory flow, rib cage and abdomen contribution to tidal volume, using a calibrated respiratory inductive plethysmography. Statistical analysis was made using Student‘s t test for independents groups. Results: Parkinson’s Disease patients had tidal volume and mean inspiratory flow (p=0,01 and p=0,03 respectively) significantly lower, respiratory frequency significantly higher (p=0,03), resulting in a minute ventilation significantly lower (p=0,02) compared to elderly subjects. There was no significant difference in rib cage or abdomen contribution between the groups. Conclusion: These results showed that there are important changes in breathing pattern components of Parkinson’s Disease patients.
