Abstract

Back school is shown in global literature as an important therapeutic resource to relieve pain in the vertebral column with the improvement of the quality of life of the people devastated for this illness. This study aims to know the social representation of the patients of the Back School of the DMR-HCFMUSP, who suffer from chronic pain in the vertebral column, by verifying the impacts of pain in their social relations. Quantitative and qualitative research data were collected with routine semistructured protocols of evaluation, which are specific for this program, by social work professionals at the DMR. The universe of the research consisted of 51 patients who had participated of the Back School from October 2001 to April 2002. We evidenced that the social representations of the sick column significantly interfere with the acceptance and adherence to instructions and attitudes towards the illness, as well as sharing the role of ‘person with a disabling condition’ with other at the same social group, what may result in loss of professional and social participation.
