A long-term effects on functional capacity of stroke survivors post exercise program: 6 month follow-up

Stroke is the leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the world. The survivors patients have motor sequelae with reduced autonomy for daily activities. Exercises programs are very important for this population because it contributes to increase muscle strength and improve functional capacity. Objective: The purpose of this study was to verify if the persons with hemiplegia after stroke have maintained the results obtained after the exercise program and what the barriers they identified to continue the exercise practice. Methods: In a clinical trial with follow-up at 24 weeks, five participants (55.8 ± 10.5 years old) with chronic stroke were evaluated. The primary outcomes were muscle strength (7-10 Maximum Repetition Test), postural balance (Timed up and Go Test), leg strength and endurance (Stand up Chair Test). The secondary outcomes were the adherence to exercise and the possible barriers to the exercise practice. Results: At 24 weeks, the participants exhibited increase in muscle strength in lower limbs. There was no difference for functional capacity. The barriers principals and the main barriers identified for exercise were pain, lack of interest in physical activity, lack of ability in physical activity and motor disabilities. In chronic stroke patients, 24 weeks after exercise program the results obtained was maintained. Conclusion: The continuous practice of exercise increase muscle strength and maintained the functional capacity. Home-based-exercise appears to be a effective means of increased muscle strength. There is a need for more studies with cost-effective strategies that target changes in behavior to obtain long-term changes in physical function after exercise program.
