Comparison between neuropsychomotor development of patients with pre and postnatal myelomeningocele repair surgery

Abstract

Objective: The goal of this study is to compare the neurodevelopmental outcome of individuals with myelomeningocele who underwent prenatal and postnatal surgery and that completed a rehabilitation program in a institution in Brazil, between 2021 and 2023, using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Method: This is a retrospective longitudinal study of 13 patients diagnosed with myelomeningocele who completed a physiotherapy and psychology protocol at a rehabilitation institution in Brazil. Data were collected through an active search of electronic medical records. Results: Among the 120 patients who attended the initial consultation, 31 underwent prenatal correction and 89 underwent postnatal correction. After the inclusion criteria were met, 13 patients were selected, 6 prenatal and 7 postnatal. All patients included in the study had hydrocephalus (100%). No statistically significant difference could be found when comparing the type of correction with the development in physiotherapy and psychotherapy. Patients without ventriculoperitoneal shunt had a higher percentage of goals achieved in psychoterapy (84.38%) compared to patients with shunt (51.33%), with a p-value of 0.079, indicating marginal significance in achievement of these goals. Conclusion: There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups studied in the sample, either in relation to motor or cognitive development. However, a tendency towards better cognitive development was observed in individuals with hydrocephalus but without ventriculoperitoneal shunt.
