Abstract

The authors based on what was established at the Viña del Mar and Tchuacán Seminars on teaching of preventive medicine in medical schools in Latin America, analyze the body of knowledge that must ferm this subject, considering medicine from a comprehensive point of view. They stress the importance of what they call "preventive attitude" that must be the ultimate goal of the subject, embracing the objectives of preventive medicine. The doctor´s role in the community and the objectives of medical education were also considered as the basis for teaching of preventive medicine.
