ALGUNS ASPECTOS SANITÁRIOS DAS HABITAÇÕES LOCALIZADAS EM ZONA URBANA DESPROVIDA DE SERVIÇOS PÚBLICOS DE SANEAMENTO

Abstract

1 - The present investigation was carried out from July to December, 1948, in the districts under the supervision o f the Santo Amaro Health Department; 2 - The field work covered 1.702 residential buildings, sanitary conditions as the water supply, sewage and refuse disposal being investigated; 3 - Out of the 1.702 houses, 660 had public water supplies, 822 were supplied by shallow wells and the remaining 220 had other ways of supply; 4 - Most of the shallow wells have presented some of the following unsanitary features:(a) Insufficient distance to cesspools or soil pits;(b) Wells placed on a levei lower than that of the cesspools or soil pits;(c) Retaining walls incomplete or not existent;(d) Wells not protected against surface waters;(e) Covers were not watertight;(f) Pumps of unsanitary types or inexistent.5 - lt was found out that the water bearing horizon was not deep. and in a large number of ca~es ;;ery near the soil surface. making the ~anitary problems more difficult;6 - 29% o f the house~ had seplic tanks; in the remammg the sewage and wastes were discharged in to ~oi I pits, cesspool~, small brooh, etc.;7 - The septic tanks were not of the proper size and satisfactory desigr.;8 - Many other irregularities were found out, the ;.anitary conditions of the houses being very poor;9 - Some suggestions are presented to the Government Authorities towards the solution of these problems.
