This paper presents a brief history of the contact between African languages and Portuguese, aiming at discussing the influence these languages had on the constitution of present-day Brazilian Portuguese. African languages have a special status in Brazil today: they are solely used in Afro-Brazilian religious ceremonies, and act as a “secret language” in the communities of Cafundó and Tabatinga, whose function is one of social identification.Downloads
