Abstract

The paper deals with the seventeenth century maroon in the Northeast of Brazil, Palmares. The archaeological study of Palmares must cope with questions relating to ethnicity, in the past and in the present. The paper ends with the challenges facing the archaeologist studying the famous maroon settlelment.
