Abstract

Journalism was one of the most developed cultural activities in Pelotas, Southern Brazil, in the XIXth Century. The facts of national politics did not go unnoticed by the cartoonists of the illustrated periodicals, who dedicated to it a great deal of their art. The purpose of this article is to analyze how the Empire's political context was configured in the periodicals. This study will approach in the first moment the pictures addressing humorously Dom Pedro II and Princess Isabel. Later on, we will see how some representatives of national politics, Ministry Council Presidents, were approached in these periodicals.
