Portrayals of Female Aging in Cinema

This paper compares how female aging is portrayed in contemporary films from the United States, France, and the United Kingdom -- Hello, My Name Is Doris (2015), The Young Lovers (2021), and Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (2022), respectively. The cinematic analysis was supported by screenshots of the films and divided into three categories: the Psychological/Emotional Portrait, the Social Portrait, and the Physical and Romantic/Sexual portrait. One of the main conclusions drawn from the analyses was that none of the three selected films managed to completely escape culturally associated preconceptions and/or stigmas about female aging and old age. All three, however, in their own way, attempt to overcome the limitations imposed on the protagonists, be they social, physical, or affective.
