Abstract

This text has as its basis the Brazilian school libraries. It presents a brief historical of the school library and its current situation, focusing on the document Evaluation of School Libraries in Brazil and on the Law 12.244/2010 which lays out the universalization of the school libraries. It analyzes data from the Censo Escolar da Educação Básica in the period from 2010 to 2017, aiming attention at the rates of expansion of the school libraries and reading rooms in the public schools. The methodology applied is comprised of bibliographic revision and a case study about the functionality of the reading room in a public school from the metropolitan region of São Paulo. It is concluded that the denominations of school library are comprehensive and associated to specific contexts; that the reading rooms from the public schools from São Paulo are in many cases unstable spaces; that the Law 12.244/2010 is vague in its definitions; and that even with every mishaps it is possible to find meaningful experiences in the conduction and use of the school libraries and reading rooms.
