Aims and Scope

The Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Research and Animal Science (BJVRAS) publishes original, unpublished scientific articles in Veterinary Medicine and related sciences.

BJVRAS is published by the School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, University of São Paulo (FMVZ-USP) and receives financial management support from the Veterinary Medicine Foundation (FUMVET).

The journal publishes:

  • Original Research Articles
  • Systematic Reviews
  • Meta-Analyses

Narrative review articles authored by internationally recognized experts may be accepted only upon invitation from the Editorial Committee.

Case reports will be considered only when they present exceptional scientific relevance and originality, duly justified by the authors.

Preliminary communications are not accepted.

Peer Review Process

After submission, each manuscript undergoes an initial editorial screening to verify compliance with the journal's formatting requirements and to assess plagiarism.

Manuscripts that pass this stage are assigned to an Associate Editor, who submits them to at least two independent reviewers. The reviewers' comments are then forwarded to the authors for revision whenever necessary.

Following revision, the manuscript is returned to the reviewers for verification that their recommendations have been adequately addressed before a final recommendation is issued. Accepted manuscripts proceed to copyediting, production, and publication.

Authors are normally notified of the first editorial decision within approximately 60 days after submission.

BJVRAS adopts an Appeals Policy. Authors who disagree with an editorial decision may submit a written, reasoned appeal to the Editor-in-Chief. The Editorial Committee reviews appeals within 30 days.

Reviewers are expected to submit their reports within 30 days of accepting the review invitation. Authors are requested to submit revised manuscripts within 30 days of receiving reviewers' comments.

BJVRAS employs a double-blind peer review process.

Open Access Policy

BJVRAS provides immediate open access to all published content based on the principle that unrestricted access to scientific knowledge promotes the democratization of science.

All published content is distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution–NonCommercial–ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).

The journal is indexed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).

Editorial Integrity, Transparency, and Best Practices

BJVRAS adheres to the Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and is committed to maintaining the integrity of the editorial process at every stage.

All submitted manuscripts are screened for plagiarism and self-plagiarism using similarity-detection software before being sent for peer review.

Editors and reviewers are required to disclose any potential conflicts of interest before participating in the editorial process.

Allegations of research or publication misconduct—including plagiarism, self-plagiarism, data fabrication or falsification, image or citation manipulation, inappropriate authorship, unauthorized use of third-party material, lack of required ethical approval, or undisclosed conflicts of interest—may be submitted at any stage, including after publication.

All allegations are treated confidentially and referred to the Editorial Committee for formal investigation.

Investigations are conducted in strict accordance with the COPE flowcharts, ensuring fairness and impartiality for all parties involved.

When misconduct is confirmed, the journal may adopt one or more of the following measures:

  • Immediate rejection of the manuscript (if still under review)
  • Publication of a Retraction, Erratum, or Expression of Concern, as appropriate
  • Notification of the appropriate authorities within the School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science (FMVZ-USP) and the University of São Paulo, whenever necessary

Ethics in Animal and Human Research

Studies involving animal experimentation must include proof of approval by an institutionally recognized Animal Care and Use Ethics Committee (CEUA). The approval protocol number and the name of the approving institution must be reported in the Materials and Methods section of the manuscript.

BJVRAS endorses the ARRIVE 2.0 (Animal Research: Reporting of In Vivo Experiments) guidelines and strongly encourages authors to design their experiments and prepare their manuscripts in accordance with these recommendations.

Manuscripts demonstrating compliance with the Essential 10 items—particularly those providing detailed descriptions of the experimental design, sample size calculation, inclusion and exclusion criteria, randomization, and blinding—will receive priority consideration during editorial evaluation.

Submission of the official ARRIVE Checklist is encouraged but not mandatory.

Studies involving human participants—including interviews, surveys, questionnaires, the collection of biological samples, or access to personal data—must be approved by the appropriate Research Ethics Committee (CEP), in accordance with Brazilian National Health Council Resolution No. 466/2012 and related regulations.

Authors must also confirm that all participants (or their legal representatives, when applicable) provided written Informed Consent (ICF) before participation in the study.

Policy on the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Policy for Authors

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools—including ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, and equivalent systems—do not meet the journal's authorship criteria because they cannot assume legal or ethical responsibility for the published work.

Accordingly, AI systems may not be listed as authors or co-authors.

Whenever generative AI has been used during any stage of manuscript preparation—including drafting, translation, advanced language editing, code generation, or figure creation—the authors must explicitly disclose its use in a dedicated section entitled "Use of Artificial Intelligence", placed immediately before the References.

This Statement should identify the following:

  • AI tool used
  • Specific purpose for which it was used

Regardless of AI assistance, the authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and scientific content of the manuscript.

Policy for Reviewers

BJVRAS operates a double-blind peer-review process that requires strict confidentiality.

Reviewers are strictly prohibited from uploading any portion of a manuscript under review—including text, tables, raw data, or images—to publicly available or commercial generative AI systems.

Such conduct constitutes a breach of editorial confidentiality and intellectual property rights and may result in appropriate disciplinary measures.

Open Science and Data Availability

BJVRAS is committed to the principles of Open Science and encourages the transparent sharing of research data supporting published findings.

Data Sharing

Authors are encouraged to deposit raw data, statistical datasets, and supplementary materials supporting their findings in reliable public repositories—such as SciELO Data, Zenodo, or Figshare—either before or at the time of manuscript submission.

All manuscripts must include a section entitled "Data Availability Statement," immediately before the References, using one of the following declarations.

1.       The raw data supporting the findings of this study have been deposited in the [Repository Name] repository and are available at: DOI: [DOI or URL].

2.       All data generated or analyzed during this study are included in this published article and its supplementary information files.

3.       The datasets generated and/or analyzed during the current study are not publicly available due to ethical and/or privacy restrictions. Still, they are available from the corresponding author upon reasonable request.

Preprint Policy

BJVRAS accepts submissions of manuscripts previously deposited in recognized preprint servers, including bioRxiv and SciELO Preprints.

Authors must identify the preprint server and provide the corresponding DOI in the Cover Letter submitted with the manuscript.

Journal History

The Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Research and Animal Science (BJVRAS) (eISSN 1678-4456) was established on April 1, 1938, under the title Revista da Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária da Universidade de São Paulo (ISSN 0301-7273).

Following the restructuring of the School in 1972, the journal was renamed Revista da Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia da Universidade de São Paulo (ISSN 0303-7525; eISSN 2318-3659).

In 1991, the journal adopted its current title—Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Research and Animal Science—reflecting the expansion of its editorial scope to encompass all areas of Veterinary Medicine and related sciences.

From 1938 to 1971, the volume numbering did not follow an annual sequence: Volume 1 covers the years 1938 and 1940; Volume 2, from 1941 to 1944; Volume 3, from 1945 to 1948; Volume 4, from 1949 to 1952; Volume 5, from 1953 to 1956; Volume 6, from 1957 to 1960; Volume 7, from 1963 to 1968; and Volume 9, from 1969 to 1971. No issues were published in 1947, 1961, 1962, 1964, or 1967.

The evaluation of manuscripts has always been based on peer review. From its foundation until 2001, the position of Editor-in-Chief was held by the Directors of FMVZ-USP. The following Professors carried out the coordination of the Editorial Board: Fernando Varella de Carvalho (1972–1974), Fernando Andreasi (1975), Eduardo Harry Birgel (1976–1980), José Cezar Panetta (1981–1984), Irvênia Luiza de Santis Prada (1985–1992), Benjamim Eurico Malucelli (1993–2000), and Maria Angélica Miglino (2001).

From 2002 onwards, to improve the efficiency of the journal's technical and financial management, the journal's operational coordination was transferred to the Veterinary Medicine Foundation (FUMVET). The Scientific Director of FUMVET has since held the position of Editor-in-Chief: Ângelo João Stopiglia (2002), Wilson Roberto Fernandes (2003–2006), Silvia Renata Gaido Cortopassi (2006–2012), and Silvio Arruda Vasconcellos (since 2013).

The position of Scientific Editor, responsible for coordinating the Editorial Board, has been held by the following Professors: Maria Angélica Miglino (2002–2006), Leonardo José Richtzenhain (2006–2009), Helenice de Souza Spinosa (2010–2013), Solange Maria Gennari (2013–2016), and Marcos Veiga dos Santos (since 2017).

Throughout its history, BJVRAS has published more than 60 volumes covering the different areas of specialization in Veterinary Medicine, in addition to thematic special issues: Wildlife (2016), Dogs and Cats (2017), Equines (2019), Donkeys and Mules (2021), and Community Veterinary Medicine (2024). Its publication frequency has varied over the years—annual (1938–1975), semiannual (1976–1993), quarterly (1994–1996), and bimonthly (1996–2015)—and it has adopted a continuous publishing model since 2016. Since that same year, the journal has published articles exclusively in English and in digital format. All volumes are available in open access on the USP Journals Portal (https://www.revistas.usp.br/bjvras), and all articles have been assigned a DOI (Digital Object Identifier).

Since its creation, the bibliographic standardization and metadata management of BJVRAS have been carried out by the Library of the School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science of the University of São Paulo (FMVZ-USP). During this period, this responsibility was undertaken by the veterinarian Virginie Buff D’Apice (1938–1958) and by the librarians: Beatriz Olegário da Costa (1958–1971), Maria Luiza Rigo Pasquarelli (1971–1982 and 1991–1994), Ana Maria Silveira Barone (1982–1991), Marfísia Pereira de Souza Lancellotti (1994–2001), Rosa Maria Fischi (2001–2014), Camila Molgara Gamba (2014–2024), and, since 2024, Denise Sana Yamashita and Maria Aparecida Laet. The editorial support team has included Carlos Alberto da Silva Vasconcelos (1995–2007), Ana Cristina Ponciano (2019–2024), Milena Trindade (since 2019), and Bernardo Taniguti (since 2024).

The BJVRAS Editorial Committee is composed of faculty members from the School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science of the University of São Paulo (FMVZ-USP) and collaborating institutions, distributed among the following subject areas: Basic Sciences, Veterinary Surgery, Veterinary Clinical Sciences, Animal Nutrition and Production, Preventive Veterinary Medicine–Animal Health, Animal Reproduction, and Veterinary Pathology.
