Abstract

Cien Años de Soledad (1967) is one of the most read and commented books in the history of Spanish-language literature. Already in the 60's, Gabriel García Márquez's novel became the first Latin American fiction to reach the mark of 100,000 copies published annually. From 1982 onwards, with the award of the Nobel Prize for Literature by the author, its overall projection became even greater. In the academic field, one of the main reasons for the continuity of this prominence seems to be the increasing legitimacy of postcolonial studies and the so-called world literature in the main universities of the planet. But if, on the one hand, it is evident that the world's interest in the work remains intense, on the other hand, the narrative of García Márquez seems still poorly situated in the midst of the literary framework of the 50s and 60s to which he belongs. How is Cien Años (...) located in relation to the panorama in question? How does its form dialogue with the proposals of other relevant writers in this field? In order to answer these questions, this article suggests that Cien Años (...) is one of the first postmodern works in the history of Latin America, which is why it must be discussed in the light of the theme of globalization.
