Piñen by Daniela Catrileo: toward a Conflictive “New Mestizaje”

This article analyzes Piñen, by Daniela Catrileo, as an act of dissident enunciation in which Mapudungun strategically disrupts Spanish in order to render colonial memory visible and affirm a dual linguistic and cultural belonging. From the diasporic urban space of Santiago de Chile, the narrators of the three stories resignify Mapuche heritage through a decolonial redefinition of mestizaje, where languages do not merge but instead enter into a productive tension. This friction, rather than hindering the future, activates it as a space of transformative potential.
