The extraterritorial writer and language change on the horizon of contemporary literature

This paper aims to present a series of reflections related to language shift in the extraterritorial writer—one of the most relevant manifestations of plurilingual poetics in contemporary literature. Although its origin is tied to the multiple instances of displacement brought about by travel, exile, diasporas, and migrations beginning in the 20th century and continuing into the 21st, a clear manifestation of this phenomenon required a shift in the relationships between language, writing, and nationhood. These changes reveal the new dynamics introduced by the 20th century, between a mother tongue and the national community to which it belongs, and, as a consequence, call into question the speaker’s presumed ownership of their native language.
