The Role of Urbanism in the Political Project of Plato's Laws

The main objective of this article is to examine the role of urbanism in Plato’s Laws. We adopt as the fundamental research hypothesis the idea that, in the work in question, the challenge of thinking about the historical realization of the excellent city involves not only the elaboration of a detailed legislative code, but also the development of genuine urban planning capable of determining how the ordering of civic space and the demographic and architectural elements that compose it should be carried out. Through an analysis of how Plato conceives the establishment and spatial organization of Magnesia, we demonstrate that this urban planning does not constitute a merely technical aspect of the foundation of the polis. On the contrary, it performs an eminently pedagogical function, insofar as it seeks to discipline habits and promote the moral formation of citizens. Urbanism thus reveals itself as a constitutive part of the political project outlined in the dialogue, functioning as an instrument of education for virtue.
