Hobbes' work inaugurates the central lines of modern political thought by thinking against (and here lie its tension and its tragedy) its most important and also its most disturbing discovery: the idea that the conflict is the irreductible nucleous of social and political relationships. Here is suggested that this idea of conflict as a key to understand political processes may be reinstalled by looking, beyond Hobbes, both at Maquiavelli's and at Shakespeare's worlds.
