Un unusual essay: “The Battle of Dreux” (I, 45)

Abstract

This article aims at elaborating some questions regarding the essay “The Battle of Dreux” (I, 45). Notably one of Montaigne’s shortest essays, this text is the only one to make a direct reference to an event contemporary to the philosopher, namely the unforgettable Battle of Dreux, which took place on December 19, 1562. Why does Montaigne distinguish this battle within the Essays? What was so special about this event that made Montaigne highlight it, even though he dedicated so few (and indirect) words to it?
