The article examines the critical discourse that Michel de Montaigne develops on the Christian notion of contrition, considered within its specific historical context, marked by the Counter-Reformation orthodoxy of the Council of Trent. In opposition to the Tridentine prescription of the mandatory nature of sacramental confession, the essay emulates a particular form of sagesse, incompatible with the submission of one’s own life and conscience to external judgment— even when this takes the form of the “tribunal of penance,” through which the Church reaffirms its
sacred function as mediator of reconciliation with God. Such sagesse, grounded in the primacy of the exercise of one’s own judgment over the self, finds its privileged expression in the self-portrait presented in the Essays.
