Syndéresis and knowledge of natural law in Thomas Aquinas

In Suma Teológica Ia-IIae pars we find the so-called natural law that is presented by Thomas Aquinas as a set of moral rules for the conduct of human action. The apprehension of the first principles that support these moral rules involves a complex intellectual process composed of several parts, among which are the agent intellect, reason, will and syndéresis. This article aims to present the important role that syndéresis plays in this epistemological process prior to moral action as such. The presentation of the theme will be guided in the first place by the attempt to understand what the concept of syndéresis is and how it is treated in the works of Thomas Aquinas, in the second place by the explanation of what the first principles of syndéresis are, and in the third and last place by how syndéresis relates to other parts that make up the process of knowledge of what guides moral action, including the precepts of natural law.
