Abstract

The present article intends to discuss the proximity between the political conceptions of liberty by John Rawls and Philip Pettit, and the democratic political arrangement derived from them. The first, being inserted in a liberal theory, understands liberty as the first principle to be realized, prior to the others in a lexical order. It means a protection, made possible by the State, against interferences external to the will of the agent in their acts. The latter, notably of republican nature, means a social status of non-domination, that is, a permanent state of safety against unauthorized intervention in agency of the subject. It is perceived, at first glance, a relevant similarity between both presented concepts. Beyond the obvious similarity, we intend to build a systematic of parallelisms and connections that permit an understanding of semi-equivalence between the thesis presented by both authors, with some differences, but whose projects are mutually compatible.
