Sidney Versus Rousseau: the republican spirit

Republicanism is made up of several matrices, including the English matrix and the French matrix to which the modern thinkers Algernon Sidney and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, respectively, are linked. Seeking a probable theoretical relationship between the English author and the thinker from Geneva regarding the republican tradition, this article will promote na examination and perhaps a reflection on the “republican spirit” in Sidney and Rousseau, pointing out the possible affinities and divergences between them, although they are bindings to diferente matrices. Therefore, the question is: is it possible to verify any theoretical relationship between these two thinkers? Preliminary, we believe that it is possible, indeed, to make such a finding from an analysis of the “republican spirit” presente under the penalties of these thinkers.
