Egoistic reasons to act into an altruistic way: the theological utilitarianism of William Paley

We intend, in this article, to analyze the ethical proposal of
William Paley. Considered as an utilitarianist of exception, Paley has
associated the principle of utility to a transcendent requirement. It

consists in the idea that individuals motivated for the search of the maximization
of happiness have as a maximum rule the obedience to the will
of God. Paley assumes that following the will of God is necessary condition
for the enjoyment of the perpetual happiness. Considering that will
of God is expressed through good and happiness of all His creatures, the
individual will be awarded with the perpetual happiness if he works to
promote the happiness of all.
