Machiavelli reader of Polybius: the peoples

The first part of the article deals with the discussions about the possibility for Machiavelli's reading of Polybius. In the second, the epistemological limit exposed by the political theory of the Greek historian is pointed out, which places the external causes of corruption in the city in the place of unintelligible. Furthermore, the centrality of the idea of balance and harmony between the parts of the city is highlighted. In the last section, it is indicated how Machiavelli inserts international relations in the political equation of the city, a point at which the dynamics of the people comes into discussion.
