Abstract

The purpose of this article is to discuss the artistic production and political activity of the architect João Batista Vilanova Artigas during the 1940s until the mid-1960s, after the consolidation of the military regime. The architect is considered one of the main expressions of modern architecture in São Paulo. He was a frequent member of the Brazilian Communist Party-PCB and editor of the Fundamentos magazine, which brought together communist intellectuals and artists who aimed to criticize modernity from the perspective of socialist realism. Therefore, it is proposed to present some architectural works and their aesthetic and artistic conceptions. Furthermore, we seek to understand how this architect and political activist tried to break away from the doctrinal envelope and follow a specific path towards modern architecture and Brazilian urbanism.
