Abstract

Young people who are involved in serious infractions in the city of São Paulo call attention to the cruelty with which they practice these acts. They are young both from the periphery or wealthier neighborhoods. The media collaborate by highlighting these events by focusing mainly on young people from the periphery. There is also talk of gangs in the city, but research could not find this phenomenon. Through interviews we can see the different ways of acting these young people and the cruelty with which they practice their actions. These actions indicate that relationships based on a principle of reciprocity are disrupted, allowing other social ties to emerge based on the fascination with power and destruction of the other.
