SUBURBAN PRIDE: THE PROJECT OF DIGNIFICATION OF RIO DE JANEIRO SUBURBS IN THE PRESS OF BAIRRO, 1948-1957

Abstract

Through an approach that relates the evolution of the urban space and the social building of their inhabitants, ther article realizes a study of the medium strata of Rio de Janeiro suburban population in the period of 1948 to 1957. It aims to demonstrate how certain ideals and practices turned to the social and urban progress of the region are part of a conscious project of dignification of the suburbs and constitute the fundamental elements for the social building of that group. The neighborhood´s press has been the main means of making explicit and transforming the contents of this project. Consequently, the present text is basically centered on the analysis of the magazine named Suburbios em Revista, which, in the studied period, distinguishes itself as the main divulging organ of the wishes of the medium suburban strata.
