Abstract

This article analyzes the translation of Isaiah 52.15, particularly the differences of interpretation of the expression יַזֶּה. The modern versions of the Bible differ on how to translate this verb, and the differences are not limited to terminology, it is also related to the meaning of the sentence. There are at least two semantic ranges represented by the translations: one of them corresponds to “spatter”, “sprinkle” and the other, to “cause admiration”, “haunt”, “astonish”. The developed argument is that, in order to interpret this passage, it is necessary to analyze not only the textual, lexical and grammatical aspects, but also the syntactical and discursive elements of the unit and its context.
