“Ana min al-yahud”, byAlmog Behar

The work of Almog Behar (born in 1978, in Netanya, Israel) belongs to a cultural and artistic trend in Israeli society that sees the recovery of both the Arabic language (and other minor Jewish languages) and the history of Middle-Eastern and North-African Jewish immigrants (Mizrachim and Sefaradim) as means of elaborating and understanding the identity anxieties of an Israel-born generation of children and grandchildren of those immigrants, which grew up in the context of Ashkenazi hegemony. In the short story “Ana min al-yahud”, here translated to Portuguese, the protagonist gathers and recreates his memories and recollections from his grandfather’s Iraqi accent. The narrative is quite successful in bringing up ever more questions rather than answering any of them, revealing the contradictions of Israeli identity.
