Abstract

Following the path of bringing the reader in Brazil closer to literary texts published in the last decades of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century by writers in the Hebrew language in Europe, this text presents the translation of the short story Father and Son by Yehuda Steinberg. Steinberg was born in 1863 in the city of Lipcani, in the current Republic of Moldova, which in the 19th century was part of the Russian Empire. Considered one of the great writers in the Yiddish language, he ended up joining the revival of the Hebrew language, a current driven by the awakening of the Zionist movement. He died in 1908 in Odessa, Ukraine, a city that had become one of the most vibrant centers of the Jewish intelligentsia and one of the centers of production of literature in the Hebrew language in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century.
