DIVINE ATTRIBUTES: THE MAIMONIDEAN THESIS AND HASDAI CRESCAS’ CRITIQUE

The philosophical discussion about the divine attributes was important both to Moses ben Maimon, or Maimonides (1135/1138–1204) as to Hasdai ben Judah, also known as Crescas (1340–1410/1411). More than a polemic of medieval Jewish and Arabic ontotheology, it is a key issue, both from Maimonides’ perspective and that of his opponent. At the center of the debate is the Avicenian concept of Necessary Being, derived from the Aristotelian Prime Mover, postulated by Maimonides and rejected by Crescas.
