Genesis 2:4 is a short verse, but it is at the center of an intense discussion about belonging. Some scholars place it as the final part of the first section of Genesis, others as the beginning of the second section, and there are even those who divide it into two parts. Therefore, it is necessary to look at the text again and seek to understand how it functions within the context in which it is found, precisely because this helps in better understanding the larger narrative. Thus, using the tools of narrative criticism, this article aims to understand Genesis 2:4 within its immediate literary context and within the book of Genesis and, then, conclude about its belonging within the sections of Genesis.
