A teacher of Portuguese carries out a reading and text creation project based on the development of communicative abilities of elementary school students. This project uses the newspaper and the news genre as a support for its pedagogical work. By bringing the young people closer to important themes in the country, the project makes them familiar with the textual elements in the news, as well as prepares them to produce this type of narrative. Basing her experience on the newspaper, the teacher assists her students in their development of capabilities to read, select, interpret and criticize. These are fundamental abilities to form citizens.
