In this testimonial, the journal Comunicação & Educação republishes the discourse made by Prof. Dr. OsvaldoSangiorgi in the public ceremony in which it was conferred him the title of Professor Emeritus, by Escola de Comunicações e
Artes of Universidade de São Paulo, on the 14th December of 2000. After presenting a synthesis of his work by talking on his pupils and followers, Sangiorgi emphasized the role the teacher has in giving the student a humanistic background, most especially nowadays, a period in history in which new technologies give people unlimited access to information and in which education, distance, and the so-called virtual schools are gaining space. The Emeritus Professor also highlights the importance his professors – from the old College of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters – had in his background and brings up his professional trajectory as a Professor, Mathematics textbook writer and researcher.
