The Museu do Homem do Nordeste (Museum of the Northeastern Man) was born from the merger of three other museums: the Museum of Anthropology (1961 – 1979), the Museum of Popular Art (1955 – 1966) and the Museu do Açúcar (Museum of Sugar) (1963 – 1977). Created in 1979 by the sociologist Gilberto Freyre, the Museum hosts collections characterized by heterogeneity variety, featuring exquisite pieces of the rich families of the lords of sugar; side by side with very simple objects still used by the least advantaged classes in their daily lives. The goal of the Museu do Homem do Nordeste is to research, document, preserve, disseminate and update the rich cultural heritage of the region, becoming an extensive field of historical, social, ethnic-cultural and ethno-historical research.Downloads
