Bacurau: the art of interweaving images, sound and memory in film creation

Abstract

Bacurau—a bird common in Brazil of very soft plumage, silent flight, bright eyes and nocturnal—lent its name to Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles’ film which tells the story of a village in the Brazilian backlands that one day mysteriously disappears from the map and is invaded by drones and strange tourists who begin an attack against the villagers. The community needs to identify the enemy and collectively create a means to defend itself. In fiction, Bacurau disappeared from the map and became only a memory without geographical reference, but in the narrative Bacurau is full of cultural references, cinematographic allusions and filmic memories (national and international), and asks us to start connecting “the threads in the flow” of the film creation process. This is our review proposal: to think this process of creating cinema.
