Abstract

Taking advantage of the film’s return to theaters (August 14, 2025), now remastered in 4K, we thought to propose this review of Carlota Joaquina, Princess of Brazil, as a way to get to know the work and discuss its historical and cinematographic aspects. The idea here is to propose contact with the character Carlota Joaquina, with Carla Camurati’s film, and the film’s significance in that historical context for Brazilian Cinema. And also because 30 years later, the film that entered the history of Brazilian cinema, especially the so-called Retomada cinema, returns to theaters. As the work was made by a female filmmaker about a female figure in the history of Brazil and Portugal, we consider it important to present them to the readership of this magazine, which at the time of the film’s release in 1995 featured an interview conducted by Roseli Fígaro.
