The article deals with the retaking of Brazilian cinematographic productions, something the author denominates as the "New Brazilian Cinema". It stresses the plurality in themes and approaches these productions present, aiming at technical improvements and access to the international market, without overlooking the quality of the work as a whole. It discusses and critiques the two recent award-winning productions: Bruno Barreto's O que é isso, companheiro?, a film that is in English, and that distorts a recent fact in the Country's history; and Walter Salles Jr.'s Central do Brasil, presenting this film as one that talks about the search for identity and that looks at Brazil with rather indifferent eyes.
