The new facilities of the Center of Culture, Memory and Sexual Diversity Studies of the State of São Paulo will be implemented on one of the last remnants of residential architecture that marked the landscape of Avenida Paulista, now a consolidated urban axis, model public space and with deep political and cultural significance. Its design addresses city’s and contemporary society’s challenges, but it also conveys the history of the city, the architecture and the family. This article reviews the history of the Franco de Mello Residence, indicating its uses and experiences; the authenticity of its elements; its changes, renovations and expansions, as well as its urban setting. This information was the foundation for the decisions related to architectural design, landscaping and restoration also presented here.
