Abstract

Research carried out in 2015 with users (residents or not) of the historical district of Paraty about the impact of interventions by the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (Iphan) in the architectural ensemble of the city observed the recurrent use of categories such as identity and tradition to explain that relationship. We intend to analyze how those categories are triggered in the symbolic dispute for the urban space considered national heritage. We are interested in observing how those categories are related to views about preservation interventions in the city, because the sense of heritage is related to a symbolic representation of memory and identity.
