Abstract

The notion of integrity is featured as a fundamental value to the preservation of cultural property. Initially focused on the physical characteristics of objects, the idea of integrity underwent changes that have broadened its meaning, granting it senses that refer to the non-material aspects of cultural property. Terms such as conceptual integrity and cultural integrity now often appear in Conservation and Restoration publications, but are usually only mentioned without deepening its significance. In this context, this paper aims to analyze the use of the term integrity and their meanings in the cultural heritage charters and ethical codes of conservators in order to understand how the notion of integrity has changed over time and how it has to be applied to movable cultural property. Finally, the applicability of the idea of conceptual integrity in the interventions of conservation and restoration is discussed.
