Abstract

This article discusses if it is possible to recognize the premises of the urban environmental heritage in the theoretical fundaments and practical application of the urban instruments for heritage protection in the city of Sao Paulo — from the Z8-200 to the Zepecs. The definition of the concept is based mainly on some texts of the historian professor Ulpiano Toledo Bezerra de Meneses, an important defender of the urban environmental heritage in Brazil. Three main issues were identified in the readings of these texts, which will be used to guide the discussion. They are: the structural issue, dealing with the integration between preservation and urban planning, the environmental issue, which deals with the concept of ambience and preservation of urban environmental heritage and, finally, the social issue, dealing with the recognition of the social nature of heritage and of shared values among different identities.
